Concert to Spotlight Jazz Faculty

A sextet of instructors from Harper College's jazz studies department will offer a free public performance from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, November 30 in the Performing Arts Center on the College's main campus, 1200 W. Algonquin Road in Palatine.

The concert, the first of its kind at Harper, comes months after the College greatly expanded its jazz offerings to provide private instruction in a variety of new instruments - from trumpet and trombone to violin, saxophone and string bass.

"Everyone who's playing in this performance is part of this brand-new jazz faculty," says jazz piano instructor Ken Spurr, who nixed a planned performance of his own Ken Spurr Jazz Ensemble for the opportunity to showcase Harper's new instructors. "It's a great opportunity for people to see and hear what we have to offer in the way of jazz instruction."

The concert is free and open to all.

Harper for years has offered private lessons in jazz guitar, voice and piano; the expanded menu followed the success of Harper jazz student Haley Reinhart on FOX's American Idol last spring. Private lessons are intended to accommodate all levels of learners, including beginners.
