Harper College will be closed for Thanksgiving Break on Wednesday, Nov. 22, through Sunday, Nov. 26.

College and Career Expo for Kids

CBS 2 Chicago Weatherman Steve Baskerville will highlight Harper College's second annual College and Career Expo which gives elementary and middle school children a taste of what going to college is like. Baskerville's appearance is part of dozens of demonstrations and hands-on activities showcasing careers in science, health care, graphic arts, manufacturing, astronomy, world languages and more.

The event is free and open to all children and parents with the goal of inspiring youngsters to go to college. The Expo takes place on Saturday, April 28 from 9 AM to 1 PM in the College's Avanté Center for Science, Health Careers and Emerging Technologies, 1200 W. Algonquin Road in Palatine.

Scheduled activities include a tour of Harper's Simulation Hospital, demonstrations of the College's graphic arts technology lab, a screening of the film "Gnarly Metal" that focuses on 21st century technology and manufacturing careers, and robotics activities. Harper faculty will share the exhibit floor with representatives from local companies such as Northrop Grumman, Astellas, Segerdahl Group and Hoffman Estates Community Bank

"Our goal is to offer an educational look at what can happen after high school, what outstanding 21st century careers are out there, and how higher education can prepare you," Harper Instructor Margaret Bilos said. "This event will allow young students to meet with Harper faculty and professionals in the science, math, technology, manufacturing and engineering fields years before they typically would do so."

Last year, over 600 parents and children attended Harper's College and Career Expo. For more information, visit www.harpercollege.edu (Search for "Expo") or call 847.925.6701.
