Performing Groups Offer Full Calendar of Winter Concerts

Harper College's vocal and instrumental ensembles are staging a host of concerts in December, offering the opportunity to seize the holiday's musical spirit without a drive into the city. Performances will boast everything from steel drums to orchestra excerpts of Tchaikovsky's classic "Nutcracker" and the chance to sing along with holiday tunes. Concerts include:

Steel Band - 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, December 4: The band will perform Christmas classics, the music of the legendary Bob Marley and classical music set to a calypso beat.

Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Lab Band - 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 5: Featuring the combined talents of students, faculty, staff and community members, the ensemble and band will perform holiday classics alongside music from legends like Ella Fitzgerald and Charlie Parker.

Concert Choir and SPECTRA (Chamber Ensemble) - 7:30 p.m. Friday, December 7: The groups boast a collectively wide repertoire, with music from all periods and cultures.

Piano Ensemble - 7:30 p.m. Saturday, December 8: The concert will feature student and faculty artists performing holiday and classical music as duos, trios, quartets and quintets.

Wind Symphony and Chamber Winds - 7:30 p.m. Thursday, December 13: The Wind Symphony will perform works by Percy Grainger, John Philip Sousa and others, while the Chamber Winds showcase the Octet No. 1 in E-flat by Josef Myslivecek.

Harper Symphony Orchestra - 3 p.m. Sunday, December 16: Comprising college, professional and community musicians, the Orchestra will serve up family-friendly holiday fare along with excerpts from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker and opportunities to sing along.

All concerts will be held in Harper's Performing Arts Center on the main campus, 1200 W. Algonquin Road in Palatine. Tickets to the Festival Chorus performance are $18 for general admission and $12 for senior citizens. All other performances are $10 for general admission and $7 for senior citizens. Children ages 12 and under are admitted at no charge for all performances.
