Harper College

Student Engagement Division

The Office of the Dean of Students is responsible for the areas of the College that are intended to connect students to campus resources, advocate for the needs of students, and support and engage students in ways that enhance the learning environment. This includes many of the “out of classroom” experiences designed to offer students ways to develop their whole identity, including:

  • Connecting to the campus and to other students
  • Developing and strengthening leadership skills
  • Understanding college policies and expectations
  • Experiencing cultural and artistic events
  • Learning about people and cultures that are different from one’s own
  • Making healthy decisions about wellness
  • Learn about consensual sexual relationships
  • Maintaining an active lifestyle
  • Learning how actions affect others
  • Gaining life skills like financial literacy and time management

Start here if you aren’t sure where to turn, or need help navigating the College. The staff can help you find your way or learn how to solve your problem.

Student Conduct operates out of the Dean’s Office and addresses all things related to student behavior on campus. This includes investigating concerns, mediating conflicts, assisting students who have concerns about faculty or staff, and taking action if a student has violated college policies or poses a threat to the campus.

The Harper Early Alert Team (HEAT) is coordinated by the Student Conduct Officer and serves as the campus threat assessment team. Anyone concerned about a possible threat of violence (such as someone “joking” about shooting up the school or bringing a bomb to campus) can report it to HEAT for their review.

Student Engagement Departments

The Harper College Athletics program offers 12 intercollegiate men’s and women’s sports teams through which student athletes compete against others in the area. Our student athletes succeed both in the classroom as well as on the fields and courts, resulting in a high student completion rate as well as in multiple individual and team titles and championships. Harper College is a member of the North Central Community College Conference (N4C) and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). Harper College also offers a comprehensive recreational program.

The Event Management Department (EMD) manages all aspects of productions and events throughout campus for campus organizations and departments. This includes both campus-led events as well as outside rentals in the J Theatre and Performing Arts Center. EMD also operates the services of the Box Office and the College ID Card Office.

The Student Involvement provides a variety of opportunities for students to engage in a wide variety of academic, social, and personal interests through an extensive calendar of intramural, recreation, leadership, community service, and other major campus events each semester. OSI supports over 40 registered student organizations, coordinates the College’s welcome activities at the start of each semester, provides access to low- or no-cost legal and financial advice for students, and promotes student advocacy on campus through advising student government.
