Learner’s Permit

We can help you get your Learner’s Permit. When you register and pay for a Driver Education course with us, we will issue you a signed Proof of Enrollment Card for a Learner’s Permit. Take this document and other information to the DMV to obtain your permit.

To obtain a Proof of Enrollment Card from us you must:

  • Enroll in and pay for the Driver Education course that includes the amount of behind-the-wheel time of your choice.
  • Receive your Proof of Enrollment Card at the Continuing Education Registration Desk, open Monday-Friday: 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Closed Saturday, Sunday, and college holidays. You can request that we mail the card to you as well. Call to make arrangements at 847.925.6300. The Registration Desk is in the lobby of Building W on the Harper College Main Campus, 1200 West Algonquin Road, Palatine, IL 60067,

From the DMV’s Drivers Permit website:

"You'll need to be accompanied by your parent or legal guardian (for consent) and bring the following documents...."

  • Proof of identity/date of birth (original birth certificate, adoption records, certified high school/grade school transcript).
  • Proof of Social Security (Social Security card, award letter, Illinois ID card record).
  • Two documents proving residency (bank statement, report card, letter on school stationery).
  • Proof of enrollment in Driver's Ed. Download this State of Illinois Driver Education Approval Form to provide the your school's confirmation that you are eligible for a Drivers Permit.

NEW ADULT DRIVER EDUCATION: BEHIND THE WHEEL, LIO 0350

This class provides the greatest number of behind-the-wheel practice hours (12 total). Class is conducted by a licensed professional instructor in safe, dual control vehicles for an enjoyable, comprehensive experience. Lessons include defensive driving techniques, parallel parking rules and techniques, highway ramp-to-ramp entering, exiting and merging, and Road Test Exam preparation. You may use our vehicle for the Illinois State Road Test and we will arrange transportation to and from the DMV. No driving experience necessary.

NEW ADULT DRIVER EDUCATION: BEHIND THE WHEEL AND PICK-UP, LIO 0351

Refresh your skills before the Illinois State Road Test. You get three two-hour behind-the-wheel lessons (six hours total). Licensed professional instructors in safe, dual control vehicles for an enjoyable, comprehensive experience. Defensive driving, parallel parking, highway ramp-to-ramp enter/exit/merge. Road Test Exam preparation. You may use our vehicle for the Illinois State Road Test; we will arrange transportation to/from the DMV. Some previous driving experience expected.

ADULT REFRESHER DRIVER EDUCATION: BEHIND THE WHEEL AND PICK-UP, LIO 0355

ADULT AND TEEN CLASSROOM ONLY COURSE IN A CLASSROOM, LIO 0358

Illinois requires all 18, 19 and 20-year-olds that have not completed a Driver Education Class to attend this class to obtain a license. It does not include any behind the wheel time. Includes six hours in a classroom.  You will cover topics applicable to Illinois and first-time drivers including traffic laws; accident factors; risk management and decision making; safety devices; distracted driving; highway signs, signals and markings; right-of-way; impaired and drunk driving; speed; and night driving.

ADULT AND TEEN CLASSROOM ONLY COURSE ONLINE, LIO 0359

Illinois requires all 18, 19 and 20-year-olds that have not completed a Driver Education Class to attend this class to obtain a license. This a six-hour online version of the class. It does not include any behind the wheel time. You will cover topics applicable to Illinois and first-time drivers including traffic laws; accident factors; risk management and decision making; safety devices; distracted driving; highway signs, signals and markings; right-of-way; impaired and drunk driving; speed; and night driving.

TEEN DRIVER EDUCATION CLASSROOM AND BEHIND THE WHEEL, LIO 0340

Complete important requirements that lead to taking the written and road tests for your driver’s license: 30 hours of classroom and six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction, the minimum required by the DMV. You will also complete 6 hours of driving observation. Work with licensed professional instructors who pick you up and drop you off. They provide you with quality instruction, complete the state certification paperwork, and issue your certificate of completion. Learners permit issued upon request.

TEEN DRIVER EDUCATION CLASSROOM AND BEHIND THE WHEEL, LIO 0341

Complete important requirements that lead to taking the written and road tests for your driver’s license: 30 hours of classroom and eight hours of behind-the-wheel instruction, exceeding the minimum required by the DMV. No driving observation is required in this package. Work with licensed professional instructors who pick you up and drop you off. They provide you with quality instruction, complete the state certification paperwork, and issue your certificate of completion. Learners permit issued upon request.

TEEN DRIVER EDUCATION CLASSROOM ONLY, LIO 0342

Complete the classroom segment necessary to obtain your license. This is the full 30 hour class spread over the required amount of time. Class is taught by a licensed professional instructor. The instructor will also complete the state certification paperwork and issue your certificate of completion after the last day of class. Learners permit issued upon request.
