GROUP GUITAR FOR AGES 7-14 (LMY 0220): This introduction to guitar for students aged 7-14 is intended to teach the basics
of guitar playing. You will learn how to read melodies, form chords and play familiar
music. Guitars and instructional materials are provided. The class is held at Harper’s
Learning and Career Center, Prospect Heights, and is a collaboration with the Wheeling
Community Consolidated School District 21. The class is intended for children whose
parents are taking classes at the Learning and Career Center on Mondays or Wednesdays.
Parents must contact Rosario at 224-578-2234 for pricing, to verify their status,
and register their children. Students who register in this section will be placed
according to their level in one of the sections on Mondays or Wednesdays. The instructor
will get in touch with you and let you know when the first meeting will take place
and decide accordingly.
TOGETHER GUITAR: PARENT/CHILD GROUP (LMU 0326): For children ages 7-12 and their parents or grandparents. Experience a guitar class with your child, open to every skill levels and a great place to embark on learning a new instrument. The experience of playing and singing together is unmatched and memorable. It creates unbreakable bonds and brings joy and meaning that you’ll cherish. Improve your skills, learn new songs, and indulge in exploring the classics. The 85-minute class requires children to have good attention abilities, focus, and a reasonable ability to be independent. Adults and children register separately. Adult and kid-sized guitars can be provided if available.
GROUP PIANO FOR BEGINNERS 1: FOR AGES 6-9 (LMY 0223): Begin your piano journey in a fun filled group instruction setting! Using the award winning Celebrate Piano! Lesson and Musicianship 1A book, students will start at the very beginning and focus on keyboard geography, beginning music notation, finger exercises, and playing short songs on the piano. Instruction includes group activities and individual attention in our state of the art Yamaha Clavinova keyboard lab. Students must have an instrument at home for daily practice. Materials purchased separately.
GROUP PIANO FOR BEGINNERS 1: FOR AGES 9-12 (LMY 0224): Begin your piano journey in a fun filled group instruction setting! Using the highly regarded Faber Accelerated Piano Adventures Lesson and Theory books for older beginners, students will focus on learning the key names, beginning music notation and staff reading, finger exercises, and playing short songs on the piano. Instruction includes group activities and individual attention in our state of the art Yamaha Clavinova keyboard lab. Students must have an instrument at home for daily practice. Materials purchased separately.
GROUP PIANO FOR BEGINNERS 2 FOR AGES 6-9 (LMY 0225): This continuation of Group Piano for Beginners 1 will expand on previously learned concepts and focus on advanced staff reading, intervals of 2nds and 3rds, hand shape and finger development, playing music in a variety of characters and styles, and creative activities. No new materials needed.
GROUP PIANO FOR BEGINNERS 2 FOR AGES 9-12 (LMY 0226): This continuation of Group Piano for Beginners 1 will expand on previously learned concepts and focus on hands together playing, advanced staff reading, intervals of 2nds, 3rds, 4ths, and 5ths, hand shape and finger development, playing music in a variety of characters and styles, and creative activities. No new materials needed.
BEGINNING GROUP VIOLIN (LMY 0219): In this friendly and supportive group atmosphere, children ages 8 to 14 learn the basics of the violin: how it is held and how a bow is balanced to achieve a pleasing sound. Learn instrument care and musical notation. This is a great short-term learning opportunity to let you see if the violin is an instrument for you. Students will be provided with appropriately sized instruments for the whole duration of the course. Your first recital will be held during the final class.
TODDLERS: MUSIC FOR US! (LMY 0200): Designed for ages 1–3 with a parent or caregiver, this class will help children practice mo-tor skills, develop emotional and social skills, and expand their verbal and cognitive skills. Covers elementary music concepts such as high/low, fast/slow, up/down, beat, rhythm, duple/triple/asymmetrical meter, singing, major/minor/modal tonalities, small and large motor movement, expressive movement, and playing rhythm instruments. Children hear a wide variety of music from different genres and cultures. Educational information about musical development in young children will be provided to parents. Registration covers 1 child and up to 2 parents or guardians
YOUNG CHILDREN: MUSIC FOR ME! (LMY 0201): Sing, move and play! Your child will ex-plore music and movement in a fun, playful, non-performance class that encourages participation, creativity, and self-expression. Our curriculum is developmentally appropriate for ages 4-5 without an adult, and develops the singing voice, solfege singing, beat awareness, rhythm and tonal patterns, small and large motor movement, and instrument playing, all in a fun filled 45 minute format. Children hear a wide variety of music from different genres and cultures, and advance toward basic music competency, the ability to sing in tune and keep a steady beat.
