Choosing a Preschool
Preschool can build a solid foundation for a lifetime of learning for your child.
Many parents are now considering their preschool options for summer and fall for their young children.
Choosing
the right preschool can payoff in your child’s educational future,
according to Michelé Robinson, Harper College Dean.
“Parents
wonder what they should look for in a preschool. They ask if the
preschool they choose will get their child ready for kindergarten. I
tell parents that your child will be ready for kindergarten if your
child is ready to learn and that’s what we focus on,” Robinson
explains.
“Our whole curriculum forms a broad base of
knowledge. And children get to use this broad base as they go into the
primary grades,” adds Fran Heun, Preschool teacher at Harper. “We
basically teach children how to learn.”
Robinson points to
research that suggests that by third grade students will decide whether
or not they enjoy learning. “So what we do as early childhood educators
is paramount. We want them to love learning. That’s the best way to
make sure they are successful going forward.”
“We
create a preschool environment that honors the child as an individual,”
she adds, “We welcome parents to visit and see what their child’s day
looks like when they are not there,” she adds.
For parents
planning to choose a preschool, Robinson reminds them to include their
child in the decision-making process. “A program may have a lot to
offer, but it may not be a good fit. Children have a good sense of
where they will feel comfortable.
