Harper College Flu Season Update
We are now in the midst of the annual flu season, and there is increased potential for the spread of the H1N1 Influenza A (Swine) Flu Virus.
Harper College continues to monitor the H1N1 situation on campus and beyond, and is receiving regular updates and guidance by maintaining contact with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) and the Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH).
According to the CDC, influenza cases are on the rise across the United States.
The College reminds everyone that prevention is essential in fighting the virus. Please be cognizant of the fact that germs spread easily.
The CDC recommends the following:
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw tissues in the trash after you use them, and wash your hands.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers also are effective if soap and water are not readily available.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
- Avoid close contact with people who are ill by maintaining a reasonable distance.
Flu Vaccinations
The IDPH is encouraging students, faculty and staff to get a seasonal flu shot. These are available through your doctor and at clinics across the suburbs. Public health authorities also recommend that certain priority groups get the H1N1 vaccination as soon as it is available.
If You Are Ill
According to the CDC, anyone experiencing flu-like symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills or fatigue should stay home until he/she has been symptom-free for 24 hours. Those who feel ill should also limit their contact with others to keep from infecting them.
Those experiencing flu-like symptoms can help the College monitor the impact of this virus on the Harper community by confidentially notifying our Health and Psychological Services staff, 847.925.6268.
