Hear the Stories and the Music

Sometimes you have to improvise to find the best conditions for making a record. When New Orleans keyboard legend Professor Longhair first entered the J&M studio on Rampart Street and sat down at the grand piano, something just didn't feel right. Longhair was accustomed to playing in bars and clubs on upright pianos. Studio owner Cosimo Matassa recalls, "He liked to kick the front of the uprights and the grand didn't have a front, and it made him uncomfortable. So when he came in to record, we'd nail a board to the front of the piano so he'd have something to kick." Read more about Tower Records.

Chiptunes

Chiptune music is new and old. You’ve heard it in TV commercials for the Cartoon Network, Disney, Nokia and Microsoft. You’ll hear it in dance clubs, but most importantly, it’s thriving around the Internet. Chiptunes evolved among musicians using sound cards from video game consoles, including the Atari 2600 and the Nintendo Entertainment System. Challenged by the limitations they offer, musicians began to compose with them, producing a unique sound. The archaic beeps and boops channel nostalgia while helping define a tech savvy generation. Some of the best know practitioners are: Pixelh8, Anamanaguchi, 8 Bit Weapon, SabrePulse and Firebrand Boy. Some have actual CDs, though most make their music available as free downloads or for purchase on their websites.
