On Campus Student Employment

Having a job on campus is convenient, and many jobs will work around your class schedule. Federal Work Study money earned does not count against your future financial aid eligibility.

Many offices on campus offer jobs to students including the Bookstore, Accounting, Registrar, Financial Aid, Information Technology, the Library and many academic division offices.

 

Regular Student Aide

Regular Student Aide is on-campus employment for students.

Who is eligible?
Current Students. Must be enrolled in at least:  6 credit hours in spring and fall, 3 credit hours in summer or enrolled in the following fall semester.

How many hours can I work?

Number of hours are determined by the  office where the student works, usually 20 or less per week.

Eligible student applications are available to campus offices which could contact you for an interview

What else can I do to get a job?
Students should  check regularly with offices where they may want to work to obtain positions.

Federal Work Study

What is Federal Work Study?
On-campus employment for students  who receive financial aid. To determine eligibility for on Federal Work Study, first complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Who is eligible?
Current students.Your financial aid indicates the maximum amount that you can earn each semester. Must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours in spring and fall. Summer employment is not usually available.

How many hours can I work?
Employment is limited to 20 hours per week.

When will I be paid?
Students are paid every two weeks. The financial aid notification indicates the maximum amount that a student can earn each semester.

What is the hourly wage?
Minimum wage is $8.25. Depending on the type of work and experience required, the pay may be higher. The department that hires you will be able to give you specific information.

What types of jobs are available for Federal Work Study and Student Aides?
Mostly clerical (data entry, filing, copying, mailings); also tutoring and in the child care center.

What happens after I fill out the application?
You will receive an email stating that your application is approved. Once active, campus offices will check the applications to see if you have the skills for which they are looking. The specific campus office will contact you for an interview.

Job opportunities may enhance your resume and provide you with experience and an income while you attend college. In return, your hiring office will expect you to be a good employee, be responsible and follow office practices and procedures.

As an Outreach Ambassador, you will work with and learn from Harper staff and make invaluable connections with faculty, staff, students and members of Harper College administration.

As the Voice of Harper, help us create a positive and lasting impression of Harper College for prospective students, families and the Harper community.

Job Description

  • Lead campus tours

  • Participate in all open houses and other mandatory functions

  • Assist, as needed, special recruitment events and other community events that occur throughout the year

  • Serve on student panels, provide information and answer questions of prospective students or incoming freshmen

  • Make presentations at high schools

  • Provide assistance with calling campaigns     

  • Inform prospective students and parents interested in Harper about programs, services, options and opportunities

  • Make campus visitors and prospective students feel welcome, comfortable and positive about Harper by demonstrating credibility, interest, enthusiasm, sincerity and helpfulness

  • Collaborate with other Outreach Ambassadors as well as Harper staff, faculty and administration

  • Provide assistance and effectively relates with people of diverse cultural, social and educational backgrounds

  • Attend mandatory training

  • Provide assistance to the Admissions Outreach office and team    

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have and maintain a 3.0 or higher GPA

  • Must be enrolled in 9 hours at Harper for Fall 2013 and Spring 2014 semesters

  • Must possess excellent communication and written skills

  • Must be a team player who is outgoing, energetic, enthusiastic and comfortable speaking in front of small and large groups
