Now that midterms are in the rearview mirror, it’s time to start thinking about the end of the semester and final exams.

Finals. Oof. Take a deep breath....

Here are four ways you can help your student through the last few weeks of the semester and finish strong:

professorCommunicate with every instructor!

Urge your student to take each of their instructors up on their offer to meet during office hours. It’s a great time to review any material from earlier in the semester and to confirm due dates and details final exams or projects.

Suggest the diligent use of study breaks. They don’t have to be long breaks, but an hour here or there will help them in the long run. Somehow, when students feel stressed about school work, they think working nonstop is the best idea. Cramming, anyone? It doesn’t really work. Be focused--have a schedule--but don’t forget to allow breathing room and time to step away.

Keep an eye on their health.sad

As cold and flu season starts, students that are worn down or stressed out are more susceptible to getting sick. Watch for signs of their mental health being affected, too. Encourage your student to visit Health and Psychological Services if they appear to be showing signs of stress.

Turning on an after-burner now may not turn a “D” into an “A” but for most students, there’s still time to improve. We have Success Services available for just that purpose. Check it out. All the services are FREE.
